Operating Budget Process

The operating budget finances the ongoing activities of the university. At the start of the fiscal year (July 1, 2019), the operating budget for the university totaled $2.3 billion. Approximately 43% of the revenue for the budget comes from non-state-supported sources, which mainly represent restricted funds for sponsored research and units that survive on their own revenues. The remaining 57% of the budget is referred to as the state-supported budget, and represents state-authorized funding used for education and general operations (E&G). State appropriations and tuition and fees are the primary revenue sources for our state-supported budget.
